iPhone Duo Car Mount: What Actually Fits a 254g Foldable
Clamp widths, magnet strength and hinge clearance — the four numbers that decide whether a car mount holds Apple's first foldable, plus our tested picks.
The iPhone Duo is the first mainstream foldable that a lot of your customers will actually carry every day — and it breaks a quiet assumption the whole car mount industry has relied on for a decade: that a phone is roughly 71 mm wide and weighs under 200 g. Folded, the Duo is 84.1 mm wide and 254 g. This guide sets out exactly what has to change in a mount to hold it, and which of our holders already do.
Why the Duo breaks "universal" mounts
Most universal car mounts on the market were validated against slab phones in the 170–200 g range, 68–76 mm wide, with a static centre of gravity. The Duo violates all three assumptions at once. It is wider when folded, nearly 30% heavier than the flagships those mounts were tested on, and its mass distribution shifts by several centimetres depending on whether the inner screen is open.
That last point is the one most buyers miss. A mount can hold a folded Duo perfectly and still fail the moment the user opens the 7.6-inch panel, because the open half acts as a lever arm pulling away from the mount head. Any mount you plan to sell as "Duo-ready" needs to be tested in both states.

Add a case and the folded width grows again. If your spec sheet quotes a maximum jaw opening of 82 mm, you are excluding every Duo owner who uses a case — which, for a $1,999 device, is nearly all of them.

What to look for in the spec sheet
- Published jaw range. If a supplier will not state the number, assume it does not fit. You need a maximum of at least 90 mm to cover a cased Duo.
- Stated load rating. Look for a figure comfortably above 254 g — 300 g or more — rather than "fits all phones".
- Hinge clearance. Clamp pads must not contact the folding seam. A mount that squeezes the seam adds a stress point the panel sees every single fold.
- Magnetic holding force. For magnetic mounts ask for the pull force in newtons, not adjectives. Car use with 254 g needs meaningfully more than a desk puck.
- Tested in both states. Ask the factory directly whether they ran vibration tests with an open foldable, not just a closed one.

Frequently asked questions
Will a normal car mount hold the iPhone Duo?
Usually not. The folded Duo is 84.1 mm wide and weighs 254 g, which is outside the design envelope of most universal clamps. Magnetic mounts that lock to the MagSafe ring are the safest choice.
What clamp width do I need?
At least 90 mm maximum opening to accommodate a cased Duo. Mounts capped at 82 mm will not fit.
Is MagSafe alignment the same as on other iPhones?
Yes. The magnet ring geometry is unchanged, so existing MagSafe mounts line up. The issue is holding force, not alignment.
Can I use a vent mount?
We do not recommend it. At 254 g the Duo puts far more load on a vent louvre than a slab phone does.
Does the hinge need clearance?
Yes. Any pad that presses on the folding seam adds stress. Look for holders that leave a visible gap at the hinge.
When should I stock Duo-ready mounts?
Ahead of the October 23 launch. Accessory attach rates are highest in the first weeks of ownership.
