iPhone Duo MagSafe Car Charging: 25W, Qi2.2 and What Actually Holds

The iPhone Duo charges wirelessly at up to 25 W over MagSafe and is Qi2.2 compatible — but putting that into a car mount introduces two problems a slab phone never had: a 254 g mass hanging off the magnet, and heat from a charging coil sitting against a folding panel. This is what to specify, and what to test.

What the Duo actually supports

The important detail for buyers: alignment has not changed. The Duo's magnet ring sits in the same place as on every modern iPhone, so a mount that is already MagSafe-correct needs no retooling. What changes is the load: 254 g hanging off that ring through a pothole is a very different engineering problem from 170 g.

The three failure modes of charging mounts with a foldable

1. Slip under load. A magnetic array sized for a slab phone holds fine on a desk and slides in a car once the mass goes up by 50%. Specify pull force in newtons and test on a bump road, not a bench.
2. Heat at the panel. A 25 W coil puts real heat into the back of the device. On a foldable that heat sits close to the hinge and the inner panel adhesive. Look for mounts with vented backs, thermal pads and proper over-temperature cut-off.
3. Misalignment with a case on. Foldable cases are thicker at the seam. If your mount's magnet ring is recessed, a case can add enough distance to drop charging speed sharply. Test with a case fitted, not bare.

What to specify

• Certified power: 15 W is the safe universal target; 25 W only if the mount's thermal design is documented.
• Pull force: ask for a figure, and ask whether it was measured with a cased 254 g device.
• Thermal behaviour: vented housing, NTC protection, and a stated cut-off temperature.
• Cable and head: a stable 12 V/24 V supply; truck fleets need 24 V tolerance.
• Orientation: the Duo's 1.4:1 inner screen is best used in landscape — a rotating head is a genuine feature here, not a gimmick.
