Car mount OEM and ODM customisation process

Key takeaways

OEM means customising an existing model with your brand; ODM means developing a new product from the factory platform. Here is the seven-step process and the timeline for each stage, from first inquiry to containers on the water.

  • OEM (logo, colour, packaging) starts at 500–1,000 pcs; full private moulds from about 10,000 pcs.
  • Samples ship in 3–5 days; production runs 7–15 working days after the 30% deposit.
  • Artwork approval is the step buyers most often under-plan — budget a week for packaging proofs.
  • Put the QC standard in writing before production starts, not after the goods arrive.

Every distributor eventually asks the same question: can I put my brand on this? The answer is almost always yes — but the difference between a smooth OEM run and a painful one is knowing what the factory needs from you, and when. This is the exact process we run with new distributors, written out step by step.

OEM vs ODM: which one are you actually asking for?

The two terms get used interchangeably, and that causes the first misunderstanding.

Ninety percent of first-time buyers want OEM — their brand on a proven product. ODM makes sense once you have sell-through data and want something competitors cannot buy from the same catalogue.

The seven steps, in order

1. Inquiry and spec (day 0–1)

Send the models, quantities and target market. A useful first inquiry states: which SKUs, monthly or per-order volume, your market (US/EU retail, Amazon FBA, promotional), and any must-have features. From that the factory returns tier pricing — usually within 24 hours. Vague inquiries get vague quotes, so the more numbers you bring, the sharper the price you get.

2. Quotation and tier selection (day 1–3)

Quotes are tiered by quantity — for example 200–1000, 1000–3000, 3000+ pcs — because production cost genuinely steps down with volume. Decide your tier before sampling; there is no point sampling against a price you will never order at.

3. Samples (day 3–8)

Sample lead time is 3–5 working days plus shipping. Samples are charged, but the fee is credited against your first bulk order. Test the sample the way your customers will: on a real dashboard, in a hot car, with the phones you actually sell.

4. Artwork and packaging approval (the under-planned step)

You supply logo files, packaging dielines and any manual text; the factory returns proofs. Budget one week and at least one revision round. This is the stage that most often delays first orders, because retail packaging is the piece buyers care most about and review least early.

5. Deposit (30%)

Standard terms are 30% deposit, 70% balance before shipment. Production is scheduled the day the deposit lands — factory slots, especially in Q4, are allocated in deposit order.

6. Production and inline QC (7–15 working days)

Regular orders run 7–15 working days depending on quantity and season. Inline QC matters more than final QC: ask what is checked on the line (pull force, cycle tests, charging function) versus at the end. If your standard is specific — a carton drop test, a salt-spray test on metal parts — put it in the purchase order, in writing, before production starts.

7. Final inspection and shipment (day +2–5)

Final random inspection against your written standard, then freight: air for samples and urgent replenishment, sea for volume. We ship FOB Shenzhen (or negotiate), and the factory books the freight forwarder of your choice or arranges one for you.

What the factory needs from you

Where buyers lose money

Three recurring mistakes, all avoidable:

  1. Sampling the wrong tier. Sampling at 500 pcs and ordering at 3000 pcs means the sample price told you nothing about the margin you will actually earn.
  2. Approving artwork over a phone call. Get the packaging proof in writing, in colour, before it goes to print.
  3. Skipping the written QC standard. "Good quality" is not a specification. Numbers are: pull force in newtons, cycle count, temperature range, drop height.

Where to start

If you want your brand on a proven model, the K8 RGB wireless charging mount and the FH01 foldable holder are the two models most often OEM-customised — both have existing tooling, so your brand goes on without mould cost.
